Clarke County, VA

The only property owned by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources after being gifted by Elizabeth Rust Williams, Clermont Farm is a unique historic property in the Shenandoah Valley in Clarke County, Virginia. Surveyed by George Washington, the house and outbuildings tell the story of the settlement of the area from 1756 to the present. MSA and Dennis Pogue Ph.D. were primary members of the Historic Structure Report Team headed by Architectural Historian Maral Kalbian. The study of the main house, smokehouse, and slave quarters has revealed over a dozen distinct building episodes in the evolution of Clermont. MSA performed extensive architectural documentation, made recommendations for future treatments and uses, helped facilitate dendrochronology and paint analysis, created construction documents and oversaw the work of the craftsmen for a complete “Lid Job” replacing the roof and restoring related cornice and trim. MSA created an animation showing the conjectural evolution of the three buildings using REVIT software. MSA has assisted the Clermont Trust as they determine the path forward to a highest and best use for the property.
